Launceston & The North
In Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city, you’ll quickly realise how the charm of well preserved country towns and rural surrounds offers craftsmanship, artisans, providores, winemakers and brewers offer the fruits of Launceston and North Tassie its labours of love! In an inner city car park, at an old industrial site once a week you can pick up seriously wonderful produce at Launceston Harvest Markets. In 2021, Launceston was recognised as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy! That’s saying something.
Discover accommodation near Deloraine in the Meander Valley, and more, located in the north of Tasmania. Depending on which way you drive, and, depending how many times you stop nothing is ever too far in Tassie. Launceston is about 3 hours north of Hobart, Tasmania’s capital.
Make sure you visit the Meander Valley. It’s a bountiful rural and wilderness region that visitors will love exploring and everything is close, in Australian terms. Discover through Tassie’s Wilderness Tours a huge variety of things to do in the Meander Region, of which Exton is a part of. Visit Moles Caves, Liffey Falls, Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, Westbury Maze, Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, and the The Great Western Tiers or Kooparoona Niara (Mountain of Spirits) which is a culturally significant meeting place of three Aboriginal nations.
Exton nearby, has a Truffle Farm nearby in the foothills of the Great Western Tiers mountain range near Deloraine. A personally guided Aboriginal cultural tour is possible through Kooparoona Niara Tours that includes exploring historic cultural sites and exposure to the freshest produce that Tasmania has on offer.
Artworks from over 90 Tassie artists are variously on show at Art as Mania in Deloraine. After a scrumptious feed at Deloraine Deli, take a 30 minute “walk off those calories” stroll (suitable for all levels) along the Meander River. It will take you over two suspension bridges, past the heritage train and children’s playground, and to the exercise equipment. There is a weir and several families of wild platypus in the river. You’ll also see a series of significant sculptures along both banks.
Travellarks acknowledges the traditional custodians of Launceston of the Stoney Creek peoples: the Therrernotepanner, Leterrermairrener and Panniher clans.
