What a find! The Ulmarra Hotel – Single Room Superior, is one of ten rooms with traditional pub-style accommodation in one a friendliest pubs around and the heartbeat of Ulmarra. It’s a historic destination to eat, play and stay in. This edge-of-the-village pub nestled next to the Clarence River, with accommodation, it has just the right balance of old vs new charm.Located 12 km North of Grafton, The Ulmarra Hotel is in a beautiful location, perched on the banks of the mighty Clarence River. But it offers way more than accommodation. This edge-of-the-village pub nestled next to the Clarence River, has just the right balance of old vs new charm.

Arriving at the Ulmarra Hotel by road you’ll clap eyes on this majestic, quintessential Australian pub built on the corner of the aptly named Coldstream & River Streets, during Federation. Blend your historic stay  (the National Trust classifies the entire Ulmarra Village; one of the best examples of a 19th Century River Port in Australia) with honest hospitality and friendliness. Dine by the curve of the Clarence River in one of NSW’s Top 5 Beer Gardens before settling at one of the canopied tables with a round of beverages & a sumptuous gastro pub feed.

Whether you opt for usual pub grub (which it ain’t – the food’s faultless, generous with lashings of local produce) or try Chef’s Shashimi tuna, Wakame, Pickled Ginger  with  Sesame Soy Wasbi Mayo, you are in for a treat. Leave room for the bulging display of desserts, slices and ice-creams – all homemade.

Standard pub grub it isn’t! The Chef weaves magic around the menu that might include “Pappardelle pancetta with confit duck, spinach, pea jus & shaved pecorino” or “Seared scallops with Thai green apple salad and lime chilli dressing?” No simple schnitties and burgers here. There’s an abundance of sides. Toss in a larder full of home-made puddings like Grannie used to make, the Ulmarra is a dining experience you won’t forget anytime soon.

Did we mention affordable? You’d be hard pressed to break a $50 bill for a night, leaving you stacks for the kitchen, bar and local village stores.

You might have driven a long way for your scallops, steak and cold beers, so a stay at the Ulmarra is super convenient. Up to 22 people can stay in twin, double, queen and family rooms. The Single Rooms accommodate 1 person with a single bed and shared bathroom facilities. Each room has bedside table, digital TV, towels and linen provided. There’s a clean, simple, and comfortable airiness here. Fresh linen, rooms with feature windows, or a fireplace, each has its own personality. Guests have a bird’s eye view of Coldstream and Rivers Streets or the Clarence River.

Your seasoned publican, Dane Baird is one minute greeting guests in his Hi Viz shirt, next minute pulling beers for the eternally thirsty crowd, clearing away plates and keeping a keen eye over his happy crowd, stopping for a yarn. He never stops. Don’t be tempted to ask him if his glass cabinet of fabulous glass antiques are FOR SALE. He’ll quickly nip that one in the bud, with a warning you’ll need to deal with his mother!

Several function areas and and a whopping great beer garden can easily accommodate a wedding, engagement, wake, birthday or a big night out. Because of the proximity to Pacific Highway, Ulmarra serves as the perfect place to rest after a long day of driving and after a big meal of scallops, steak and cold beers, who wouldn’t enjoy a comfy bed in a classic Australian pub?
