About this listing

YARRA VALLEY | FOREST RETREAT | ECO-FRIENDLY OFF-GRID

The Slate House in Victoria’s Healesville is a place of wonderment. If your expectation is to forget about time and be delighted at the things you’ll find there from cool morning mists and mysterious fog, to warm rays of sun filtering through the canopy and sublime accommodation for 6 guests, then you have arrived! You might have to pinch yourself.

A captivating tingle of discovery descends as you approach the forest high location atop magnificent Mount Toolebewong just over an hour outside of Melbourne’s CBD, along the Maroondah Highway.

Arriving here feels like you’re immersed in a magical storybook, tree ferns, natural foliage and lush forest wrapped around the unique stacked slate house. Next, you’ll be wandering down a secret path for imps and fairies! Stepping out from your vehicle is the welcoming hum, tweeting, and cooee of abundant birdlife, with possibly a lyrebird lurking.

Entering The Slate House you’ll be drawn into your home away from home, with its welcoming glow and styling touches that could be your own.  Entering via the kitchen downstairs there’s a handy butler’s pantry and Falcon stove, and all the mod cons where you can cook together or use the barbecue – there’s an outdoor eating area for all seasons, surrounded by natural beauty.  An inviting hanging egg chair sways outside amongst the lushness which we hope you don’t fight over to finish that good book or simply ponder on a lazy afternoon.

The relaxed mood of the downstairs living area is enhanced with its rustic beams, mood lighting and calm tones which completes the intention for a simple and timeless pleasure in a peaceful and tranquil getaway. Downstairs is fully accessible, however 2 other bedrooms are upstairs.

There’s a dining room big enough for a dinner party that could be served majestically on the huge dining table made from a fallen ash to enjoy produce you’ve found in wonderful stores and stops enroute. Enter the spacious, comfy loungeroom with its roaring open fireplace for chilly weather. Then there’s a bedroom and large bathroom you simply can’t walk past without mouthing “WOW”’ with its luxurious vanity, walk-in shower, toilet, and a separate laundry complete with washing machine and dryer.

Upstairs are 2 bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom and views of the treetops you’ll be mesmerised by, if not by them, then by the moonlight. With a nod to the environment off-grid eco-friendly nature has been developed over the years at The Slate House with a well maintained generator and five new lithium batteries to supply the power, water is from the mountain and a natural spring tops the tanks. Plus, efficient double-glazed windows to keep the home at an ambient temperature. There’s gas ducted heating too.

The Slate House is a private retreat yet is only a short drive into Healesville with its cafes, distilleries, wine bars, and wineries for those wanting to indulge in the experiences that the Yarra Valley has to offer. Known for its award-winning regional food and wine as well as pristine rainforests, abundant bird life and picturesque places to pitch a gourmet picnic, Healesville and The Slate House is your central and perfect accommodation hub.
