About this listing

INSPIRING STAY | ICONIC & HISTORIC | UNIQUE B&B

Here, in the deep peace of the Hunter region, The Barracks, Tocal acreage is surrounded by history and nostalgia. Tucked near the iconic town of Paterson, The Barracks, Tocal sitting among grand buildings and absorbing history, is only 15 minutes’ drive from Maitland and 2.5 hours’ north of Sydney.

The Barracks, Tocal as part of Tocal Homestead, allows you to dig into the past of the magnificently restored outbuildings, walk peaceful trails trilling with birdsong, and unwind in the genial company of grazing animals on a working farm, picturesque gardens and trees including gigantic fig trees.

Offering 4 boutique Bed and Breakfast suites in The Barracks building, your accommodation has its own historic fascination. The 4 superbly appointed guest suites once housed early 19th century convicts, hence the naming of each suite after them. It is unlikely that convicts enjoyed the elegant country furnishings individually styled today as they cleared Tocal’s rainforest, planted the first crops, tended livestock, and built Tocal’s first fences and farm buildings.

Each suite has kitchenette downstairs, your own bathroom, a cosy sitting room (with air conditioning and a fire at the press of a button) and dining setting. Your kitchenette has a toaster, stocked with tea & coffee, milk and biscuits (topped up daily).  Delivered fresh to your room the morning of your stay, the complimentary gourmet breakfast hamper includes locally-made sourdough bread & jams and much more. Your bedroom in your own suite is upstairs.

Each room has sweeping views of lush countryside, free roaming farm animals, trees swaying with wafts, and whiffs of pure remote air.

As guests turn onto Tocal Homestead and drive through the white picket fence they will be awe-struck by the property’s exceptional preservation that dates to 1841 and is subject to a Permanent Conservation Order; the set of timber, brick and stone buildings which were established on once solely agricultural lands now with some preserved for almost 200 years.

By the time Tocal’s remaining sole private owner, Charles Alexander died in 1947, a large estate and complex will was left, and the site took on a new era yet retained its past governed by the CB Alexander Foundation.

Charles wanted his estate to be used to help orphan and destitute children by training them for agricultural careers. This remains core to the purpose of the the CB Alexander Foundation today. It explains the collocated Tocal Agricultural College, education focus for curriculum-based, interactive programs for primary and high school students across history, geography, agriculture and science.

Full of surprises and stories, you are welcome to take in the highlights of the heritage site including the Tocal Homestead, Blacket Barn, Thunderbolts Cottage, Rolls Royce and a range of original outbuildings and yards on especially arranged tours. Ask ahead of your stay.
