About this listing

BE PAMPERED | PRIVATE BEACH | BRUNY ISLAND SOLITUDE

Feel a deep sense of relaxation and contentment while being transported back to a simpler time. The effect is immediate when you arrive at Questa accommodation in Barnes Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania, your idyllic get-away-from-it-all destination.

Perched on the foreshore of Barnes Bay, this cleverly restored eco-stay features 1800s to 1950s décor. An eclectic and inviting retro-styled interior welcomes guests. It’s a bit quirky, always comfortable, and supremely homely!

With a nod to its historic past, imagine pressing ‘’fast forward’’ to present day where Questa’s guests enjoy all the comforts of space, open plan living, quality kitchen gadgetry and expansive wrap-around views you’d expect to see in a coffee table photography book! Being so secluded, curtains and blinds aren’t necessary so waking up and rubbing your eyes as you stretch, you will be mesmerised by the Barnes Bay views from your bedroom window. The bedrooms have vintage beds, mirrors and lampshades (cute ones with fringes), original fireplaces (decorative only). In the main bedroom an 1800’s patchwork quilt adorns the Queen bed where underneath you will sink into a Koala mattress as you nod off. Bring your eye masks if early morning light disturbs you.

The modern bathroom with its deep tub has a plum water view and in balmy weather you can let the window slide open, breathe deeply, watch boats bobbing, listen and chat to any critters lurking on the grass.

The engine room of the house – the open plan kitchen – boasts wooden worktops, an array of cooking implements, gadgetry, appliances and some basic pantry items with refillable glass jars. The kitchen flows into the adjoining sunroom

Numerous environmental considerations for heating and cooling have been thoughtfully considered. You will stay as warm as toast on the bleakest of days, as natural light radiates throughout this much-loved home. Double glazing, full insulation, and reverse cycle air-conditioning together with the ambience of a large and efficient wood-fire heater, maintain warmth when it’s cooler. A solar system is planned for implementation in the short term.

Deft hands have crafted Tasmanian Oak flooring throughout that flows onto the wraparound decking. Melt stress away while seated on the verandah contemplating the wildlife, the sea, the boats or the stars. Whether you’re feeling contemplative or introspective or plotting the day’s activities – a dip in the calm waters, boating, kayaking, fishing or taking pleasure in watching bird’s lark, you will be sure to feel that life is simpler. The morning cuppa or early evening soiree will have you absorbing the breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape and Barnes Bay anchorage which is immediately in front of Questa.

Questa Bruny Island location is ten minutes’ drive from Bruny Island Wild – Food and Events Dennes Point (there are no supplies here, just wonderful wood fired pizza), otherwise Adventure Bay and the local providores are where you can get stores. See our Tips below for more information on provisioning.

In Dennes Point, don’t overlook the sourdough cooking class (bookings essential), grab a wood oven pizza to take home. Don’t let the pizza go cold whilst becoming distracted by arts and craft at Art Untamed nearby.

Questa is an all-year-round accommodation with many winter walks and hikes while rugged up. For adventure activities on Bruny Island take scenic drives exploring rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, eucalyptus forests, and wetlands and experience diverse wildlife returning home with your wares to cook, bake, fry or BBQ.  In warmer months Bruny Island is your oyster, literally. See our Things to do in Bruny Island and Roadtrips to Bruny Island.

Unequivocally, this is the most serene accommodation on Bruny Island, Tasmania. A lot of effort appears to have gone into keeping this place true to its time. Guests remark “Take me back please”.

TIPS for your stay:

There’s only a small convenience store at the local petrol station. We suggest guests stock up at Margate on the way to Questa.  Alternatively stock up at Kingston (outermost suburb from Hobart), order online, and click and collect on the way to the Ferry at Kettering.

Barnes Bay is accessible from D’Entrecasteaux Channel.  Barnes Bay is a very sheltered body of water, perfect for mooring large boats all year round.

QUESTA is suitable for people with limited mobility. We ask you to note that there is level access onto the rear veranda and directly into the house which is level with the house. For wheelchair users there is 20 metres of grass to cross which may not suit guests to the entry. If you want more information, kindly send an enquiry.
